The Friday Five is a semi-regular feature here on the blog where I post about some things from the past week that I’ve enjoyed reading, listening to, watching, or am just thankful for.
Cory Wong – “Sidestep” (live)
I’m probably wicked late to this party, but better late than never. Damn is this funky! Cory Wong is one of the guitarists from the band Vulfpeck and this particular track is from the double live album recorded during his Syncopate & Motivate tour.
As you might already know, I’m now part of a second podcast. One of the things I love about doing this is that I get to learn something new each episode. In the most recent episodes, we’ve had the chance to talk with a Maine music producer with a chart-topping song, the owners of a fitness center, our friend and professional photographer, and a lawyer who is also a craft distiller.
Okay, so this one is a bit of cheating since this was a couple weeks ago, but if you can’t cheat a little on your own blog, then what’s the point of the internet? This was an incredible well written, fun read that I’d recommend to anyone of any age. It surprised me a couple times and was also inspiring. This book also plays a sizable role in Gaiman’s Masterclass on storytelling, which I keep meaning to finish up.
The trailer for Dune
As much as I geek out about sci-fi, I was never a Dune kid. Never read the book or watched the David Lynch movie based on the book. If anything, I know more about the long history of people trying to adapt the book for screen (including Salvador Dali) than about the actual plot of said book. Well, this trailer changed all that for me, and I’m now inspired to read it before seeing the flick.
Gillian Welch – Time (The Revelator)
This one comes via the aforementioned podcast with Jonathan Wyman and was one of his desert island records from another podcast. Since I don’t have the words to really describe the gut-level beauty of this album, I’ll leave it for you to discover for yourself.
Enjoyed these or found them useful? Good. Perhaps you’d like to check out some of the things I’ve written recently below.
