I decided to take a week off from blogging to think some things over. What with an election being tallied, a nation in the balance, and a pandemic continuing to ramp up and rage across the country… it seemed like the right thing to do.
One of the things I was grappling with is what I want this blog to be.
The quick answer is that it’s my alternative to the quick hit style of social media. Instead of a swift, snarky post or retort, I take some time and try to gather my thoughts into some cohesive form and expand on them a little bit. Of course, I then post a link on social media with some sort of breezy bon mot, so maybe I’m still not achieving my goal. Oh well.
The longer answer is that I want some sort of dialogue with the world. If that sounds a little pretentious or grandiose for you, feel free to go start your own blog and make of it whatever you’d like. This is my little red wagon and I’ll fill it however I’d like.
Something that’s been a little uncomfortable for me is that the blog posts that have had the largest number of readers have been issues that I don’t always feel qualified to talk about. I don’t claim to be an expert on much of anything, let alone myself or my place in this world. So when a whole bunch of people read a post about social justice or fear about the current state of the world rather than thoughts about writing or one of my poems, I’m not sure what to make of it.
Maybe it’s the fumbling around with the subject matter that makes it interesting. Maybe it’s just weird luck that people have found themselves reading those posts. Much like a lot of things, I have no idea.
Anyways, it’s good to be back. And if you’re reading, then it’s good to have you around. I hope that some of this makes sense to you, because it doesn’t always to the guy who’s writing it.
